Women’s Running Stories | EP209 Daisy Martinez: How the Trails Saved Her Life
“This episode features Daisy Martinez, an ultra trail runner and community builder with an exceptional running story.
Daisy Martinez started running when a friend suggested she come to a night run in LA, hosted by Blacklist LA. At the time, Daisy was a young single mom working multiple jobs and going to school, and she was struggling with her physical and mental health. From that very first run, Daisy started a journey that would reshape her life; she credits finding the trails for saving her life. Today, Daisy has been exploring the trails for over a decade, and she is the co-founder of Chingonas on the Run.
In addition, a few years ago, Daisy was diagnosed with MS. And just last October, she ran what she considers her comeback race: the Javelina 100k.”
Episode 109: Taking Space on the Trails: A Conversation with Scholarship Winner Daisy Martinez
“Episode 109 of Trail Society features an inspiring conversation with Daisy Martinez, the rabbit x Trail Society 100K scholarship winner whose story embodies resilience and representation. A Mexican American ultrarunner from Los Angeles, Daisy started trail running in 2016 and has since transformed personal challenges into fuel for her running journey. As a teen parent and now single mother, she credits the endurance and grit she built while raising her son with helping her push through the mental and physical demands of ultrarunning. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2023, Daisy has been learning how to continue pursuing the sport she loves while managing the realities of an autoimmune disease.
Beyond her personal racing goals, Daisy is driven by a deep commitment to community. She co-founded Chingonas on the Run to empower women, especially women of color, to take up space in trail running and the outdoors. From racing her first ultramarathons, to training for Javelina 100K, Daisy embraces each challenge as a way to learn, grow, and inspire others. Through her scholarship, she hopes to show what’s possible when passion meets support, and to blaze a trail for more underrepresented runners at start lines everywhere.”

BIPOC Runners talk races, group runs and give tips on gear and staying motivated
“DAISY MARTINEZ living in the shadow of Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains, Daisy Martinez used to look up and see a scene that looked beautiful, but distant, maybe even unattainable. Now, those peaks, canyons, and ridgelines look more like a lifeline. By 2015, Martinez had been road running for years, dealing with a series of injuries before she developed horrible shin splints and a doctor advised her to give up the pursuit. She was struggling at the time with her mental and physical health, and needed some sort of outlet. “I knew I had to keep moving my body, so I actually started hiking for the first time,” she recalls. “Seeing the movie backdrop mountains of the Angeles National Forest—and then being able to actually experience them on foot—was life-changing… (CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING)”

How Trail running changed daisy’s life
“A couple of month ago, I went to a Believe Nation Seminar with Evan Charmichael. While I was there I met this lady named Daisy who had the most incredible positive energy. I liked her so much we became Instagram friends and a week later we were up at 4am headed to do a sunrise trek in Topanga CA.
I brought her on to the Carla Palmer show to talk about her experience with trail running in hopes that it would inspire folks to try something new/different. For Daisy, it has been life changing and the mental toughness needed to do trail running successfully, has crossed over into other areas of her life.”
